Tree Culture

Last week Freefall responded to an artistic provocation set by Johanna Korndorfer from the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World (CCANW) based in Haldon Forest, Exeter.  Johanna asked the group to think about the words Tree Culture and respond creatively to express thoughts they had about trees.  Admittedly a broad spectrum to start from, but we discussed how we all relate to trees in life, what they mean to us and issues surrounding the environment.

Trees as beauty. Trees under threat. Trees as sources of life. Trees for Oxygen. Trees as homes for animals. Trees as textures or colours. Trees as shade. Trees filtering light. Trees as paper/ as benches/ as beds/ as coffins. Trees as shelter. Trees cut down-Deforestation. Trees roots (that uproot manmade roads?). Trees leaves. Big old trees. Tree stumps. Holes in Trees-what’s inside?  Fallen Trees.

The group have produced paintings, photographs and 3D art to communicate an idea with those who view their work as part of the exhibition in Haldon Forest.

For more information on the exhibition and the task see: http://ccanw.co.uk/activities/schools-exhibition.htm and watch this space for examples of their work.
